Washington state has one of the best recycling rates in the country. However, according to the Washington Department of Ecology’s most recent estimates in 2013, Washington’s recycling rate has dropped to 48.9, which is down from 50.1% of the year prior. What this percentage reflects is that approximately 4.3 million tons of materials were recycled in 2013, while about 4.5 million tons of waste were disposed of in landfills. Of that amount 77,494 tons of plastic were recycled, which was a mere .1% increase from the previous year. PET recycling however, increased by 13.3% and was totaled at 21,333 tons. What these reports indicate is that Washington’s rate has remained around 50% for the past 4 years. It appears that Washington may have reached a plateau. A collaboration with PPR can help the Evergreen State surmount this stagnation and take proactive steps toward improving its recycling rate by providing easy plastic waste disposal, which ensures both economic and environmental gains for Washington-based companies.
