The state South Dakota could be doing more to improve its recycling rate. According to the State of South Dakota Recycling/Diversion Report 2011, prepared by the South Dakota Department of Environment & Natural Resources Waste Management Program, South Dakota disposed of around 579,951 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 15 different landfills while recycling only 131,427 tons of MSW statewide. The report estimated that South Dakota’s recycling rate was a mere 18.5%. This falls well below the national average of 34%. Of that 18%, only 9% was recycled plastic, which amounted to (a not insignificant)3,217.3 tons. A collaboration with PPR can help the Mount Rushmore State get back on track and take proactive steps toward improving its recycling rate by providing easy plastic waste disposal, which ensures both economic and environmental gains for South Dakota-based companies.
