According to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, one ton of recycled plastic saves 5,774 Kwh of energy, 685 gallons of oil, 98 million Btu’s of energy, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. Additionally, producing plastic products from recycled plastics save around 88% of the energy necessary to produce virgin plastic from raw materials. Unfortunately, Mississippi’s recycling rate is well below the national average. According to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality: Mississippi annually generates 2.6 million tons of waste. This amount of waste could bury 550 football fields six feet deep in compacted garbage. Of this waste, plastic comprises 7%. While this may not seem like a large number, it amounts to more than 1.8 million tons. A collaboration with PPR can help the Magnolia State take proactive steps toward improving its recycling rate by providing easy plastic waste disposal, which ensures both economic and environmental gains for Mississippi-based companies.
