Michigan’s recycling rate has been increasing slowly but steadily. The final report from November 2016 entitled “Measuring Recycling in the State of Michigan: 2014 Recycling Rate” estimated Michigan’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) recycling rate at 15.3%, which is an increase of 0.3% when compared the previous year. 43% of MSW in Michigan is made up of potentially recyclable materials. Additionally, in 2013, the landfilled volume of generated waste was 21,581,275 cubic yards, and this volume increased by 5.3% in 2014 to 22,715,636 cubic yards. The total disposed tonnage in 2014 was reported to be 8,026,443 tons. While these numbers do illustrate minute improvements, Michigan still has quite a ways to go before achieving its goal of a 30% recycling rate. A collaboration with PPR can help the Great Lake State take proactive steps toward increasing this recycling rate goal by providing easy plastic waste disposal, which ensures both economic and environmental gains for Michigan-based companies.
