According to“The State of Maine’s Environment 2014”, a report produced by the Environmental Policy Group in the Environmental Studies Department at Colby College, the environmentally responsible disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Maine is an exponentially growing issueas landfill space decreases while pollution increases. In 2012, Maine generated over 1.3 million tons of MSW, yet only 39.46% of this waste was recycled (Maine DEP, 2014g).Additionally, in 2012, 60% of this generated waste could have been recycled or composted. 13% of MSW generated by Maine residents was plastic. A collaboration with PPR can help the Pine Tree State make steps toward increasing the its recycling rate by providing easy plastic waste disposal, which ensures both economic and environmental gains for Maine-based companies.
