17% of the waste deposited in Indiana landfills in 2012 was plastic[1]. According to U.S. EPA’s report, Municipal Solid Waste Generation, Recycling and Disposal in the United States: Facts and Figures for 2012, 54 percent of waste nation-wide was disposed of in landfills and only 34.5 percent was recycled. Across the US and especially within Indiana’s borders, plastic waste was a large contributing factor to rising landfill rates. The resulting reduction in carbon emissions from a mere 34.5 % of recycled waste nation-wide is estimated to be more than 168 million metric tons—the equivalent of the greenhouse gases emitted from over 33 million cars. Imagine if this percentage was raised to just 50%! A collaboration with PPR can enable Indiana to keep on track with the rest of the nation and increase its recycling rate by providing easy plastic waste disposal, which for many companies, saves the expense and negative environmental impact of a landfill.
